Start /sp/console serial console is in use

This serial connection connects to the ttyS0 or COM1 serial port of the VM or virtual machine scale set instance, providing access independent of the network or operating system state. The serial console can only be accessed by using the Azure portal and is allowed only for those users who have an access role of Contributor or higher to the VM or virtual machine scale set. Serial Console works in the same manner for VMs and virtual machine scale set instances.

In this doc, all mentions to VMs will implicitly include virtual machine scale set instances unless otherwise stated. Serial Console is generally available in global Azure regions and in public preview in Azure Government.

It is not yet available in the Azure China cloud. To access the Serial Console on your VM or virtual machine scale set instance, you will need the following:. Serial Console is currently incompatible with a managed boot diagnostics storage account. To use Serial Console, ensure that you are using a custom storage account that is in the same region as your VM and accessible from all networks. You can find the setting in the Networking section of the storage account Overview page.

The Serial Console for VMs and virtual machine scale set is accessible only through the Azure portal:. Serial Console for VMs is as straightforward as clicking on Serial console within the Help section in the Azure portal. Navigate to All resources and select a Virtual Machine. At any time, you can switch back to the system controller prompt from the OpenBoot prompt by typing the pound key followed by the period.

When typing at the OpenBoot prompt, characters are not echoed to the screen. When connecting to the system controller using the NET MGT port for the first time, the default password is the last eight digits of the chassis serial number.

You must assign a password during the initial system configuration, and the password should be documented in a safe location. The ALOM system controller runs independently of the service regardless of the system power state. More than one user can access the console, but only one can have write privileges; the others have read-only access. In other words, several users can view the console, but only one user can enter commands.

To gain write access to the console, use the —f option as follows:.
